Why We Use a Curriculum

A puppy's early weeks shape the dog they become. Rather than leaving those weeks to chance, every litter at Mountain Valley Poodles is raised on a structured puppy curriculum in our own home in Utah — not a kennel — so puppies are exposed to real household life, gentle handling, and early learning from the very beginning. The goal is simple: puppies that leave for their new families are confident, adaptable, and already comfortable with the sights, sounds, and textures of everyday life.

We built our program around raising exceptional Miniature Poodles — not just producing puppies, but empowering each one to reach their full potential before they ever leave our care. That is the whole idea behind a curriculum instead of simply letting a litter grow up in a pen: every week of a puppy's first two months is an opportunity to build confidence and resilience, and we treat it that way. It is also part of why we ask families to be patient with our process — the deposit, waitlist, and 6-week choosing timeline exist so that every puppy gets the full benefit of the curriculum before going home, rather than leaving early before that foundation is complete.

A Closer Look at Each Piece

Early Scent Introduction happens in the very first weeks of life, while puppies' other senses are still developing, which is exactly when this kind of early neurological stimulation appears to matter most. The idea is straightforward: controlled, gentle exposure to new scents early on helps puppies build the kind of stress tolerance and adaptability that serves them well for the rest of their lives — whether that is a new home, a car ride, or a busy vet's office.

Gentle handling is not a one-time event but a daily habit throughout the curriculum. We handle paws, ears, mouths, and bodies the same way a groomer or veterinarian eventually will, so that by the time your puppy meets either one, the experience is familiar rather than frightening. This is also where nail trims, ear checks, and basic grooming habits get their start.

Socialization at this stage is about steady, low-stress exposure rather than overwhelming a young puppy with too much too soon. Puppies experience the normal rhythm of a lived-in home — voices, footsteps, doors, household sounds — in a way that a kennel-raised litter typically does not, which is a large part of why our puppies tend to settle into new homes with relative ease.

And because every litter is raised in our home rather than in an outdoor kennel, all three pieces of the curriculum happen together, every day, as part of normal family life — not as scheduled training sessions bolted onto kennel time.

Health Care Woven Into the Curriculum

The curriculum runs alongside a full schedule of veterinary care. Puppies are dewormed on a regular schedule starting at 2 weeks of age, receive their first age-appropriate DHPP combination vaccine before going home, and are examined nose-to-tail by a licensed veterinarian ahead of go-home day — the full detail is on our vaccines & dewormings page. Every puppy leaves with their individual vaccination and deworming records and a written 1-year health guarantee as part of their final contract, so the curriculum and their health care are always moving together, not treated as separate boxes to check.

Why It Matters for Your New Puppy

Puppies raised with an intentional curriculum tend to settle into new homes with less stress, adjust to new routines faster, and are generally more resilient when they encounter something unfamiliar — a new sound, a new person, a car ride, or a first vet visit. Because our puppies are raised in our home on this curriculum from their earliest weeks, by the time they come home to you at 8 weeks old, they already have a foundation of gentle handling, early scent work, and everyday socialization behind them. Continuing consistent, positive handling and socialization once your puppy is home builds directly on that foundation.

Once your puppy comes home, the best thing you can do is keep that momentum going: continue gentle handling of paws, ears, and mouth so grooming and vet visits stay stress-free, keep introducing new sounds and situations gradually, and — per our vaccine schedule — hold off on dog parks, pet stores, and areas frequented by unknown dogs until their vaccine series is complete around 16 weeks.
