One Breed, Three Sizes
Toy, Miniature, and Standard Poodles are not three different breeds — they are the same breed, the Poodle, bred selectively over generations into three official size varieties. According to the American Kennel Club breed standard, a Toy Poodle stands 10 inches and under at the shoulder, a Miniature Poodle stands over 10 inches and up to 15 inches, and a Standard Poodle stands over 15 inches, with many adults reaching 18–24 inches. Weight follows a similar scale: Toys typically weigh 4–6 pounds, Minis roughly 10–15 pounds, and Standards 45–70 pounds or more. Every size shares the same curly, low-shedding coat, the same famously sharp intelligence, and the same devoted, people-focused temperament — the differences come down to size, exercise needs, and which size fits your home and lifestyle best.
Historically, the Standard came first, developed in Germany and France as a water retriever before its intelligence and trainability made it a favorite companion and circus performer. Breeders later developed the Miniature and Toy varieties specifically to bring that same brilliant, devoted temperament into smaller, more portable packages for families who wanted the Poodle's personality without the Standard's size. Because all three share one breed standard and one gene pool history, choosing between them is really a question of size and lifestyle fit, not a question of which is the "better" dog — each size can be an equally wonderful, equally intelligent companion in the right home.

Equally Intelligent
Toy, Mini, and Standard Poodles all rank among the most trainable dogs, regardless of size. A smaller Poodle is every bit as sharp as a large one.
Equally Devoted
All three sizes bond closely with their people and thrive on companionship. Size does not change how affectionate or loyal a Poodle is.
Energy Scales with Size
Standards generally need the most daily exercise and space to run; Minis are playful and active but adapt well to houses and apartments alike; Toys are the most content with shorter, gentler play sessions.
Living Space
Toys and Minis both do very well in apartments and smaller homes. Standards are happiest with a yard or regular access to open space to match their size and energy.
Grooming, Across All Three Sizes
Every Poodle size shares the same single, curly coat that sheds very little — which is part of why the breed is popular with families concerned about shedding and dander (see our full guide on whether mini Poodles shed). Regardless of size, that coat needs the same basic care: regular brushing to prevent matting, and professional grooming roughly every four to six weeks to keep it healthy and manageable. A larger coat on a Standard simply takes more time, and more product, to maintain than the same coat on a Toy or Mini — but the routine itself does not change with size.
Which Size Suits Your Home?
If you live in an apartment or want the smallest, most portable Poodle, a Toy may be the best fit. If you want a dog with real substance and sturdiness — big enough to play energetically with kids, small enough to travel easily and live comfortably in most homes — a Miniature is often the sweet spot between the two extremes. If you have an active household, plenty of space, and want a dog built for long hikes, swimming, or field sports alongside the breed's signature intelligence, a Standard is likely the better match.
