A History Worth Telling
From the cold waters of Europe to your living room couch.
1500s–1600s · Germany
Born by the Water
The Poodle began as a hard-working water retriever in Germany. Its very name comes from the German “Pudel,” meaning to splash in water. Even the famous Poodle “clip” was practical — coat was trimmed to help them swim, while pom-poms were left to keep joints and vital organs warm in icy water.
1600s–1700s · France
The Pride of France
The breed flourished in France, where it became known as the Caniche (“duck dog”) and, eventually, the national dog. Prized by nobility for its beauty and intelligence, the Poodle became a cherished companion — and a star of the traveling circus, where its quick mind and love of performing delighted crowds.
19th Century
Three Sizes, One Brilliant Mind
To bring the Poodle's wonderful temperament into more homes, breeders thoughtfully developed the Standard down into the Miniature and, later, the Toy. Each shares the same intelligence and devotion — the Miniature simply offers it in a portable, family-friendly package perfect for life today.
